The Vancouver Island Premier League (VIPL) is comprised of 8 divisions with 39 regional teams of competitive soccer players from Victoria to Port Hardy, Powell River to Port Alberni and every community in between. The standings have been tallied, and 4 Marine Harvest Upper Island Riptide teams will be entering provincial play-downs in the coveted first place position.
The Marine Harvest Upper Island Riptide elite soccer program fields 8 teams – 4 boys teams and 4 girls teams, ranging in age from 14-18. Each of these regional teams include players from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Powell River, and Port Hardy. Since the inception of the VIPL in 2011/2012, only a couple of seasons have seen 3 or 4 Riptide teams finishing first in the standings before this year.
“We are all very proud of the efforts of the Riptide Organization, ” stated Marine Harvest Upper Island Riptide Technical Director Shel Brodsgaard. “We have been building a highly successful and respected program the past few years and continue to achieve new milestones. Through the continued effort of our Technical Team, Ken Garraway, Geoff Hackett and Stephen Hall plus the commitment of all of our coaches, managers, parents and players we continue to strive to find and/or create success.”
The program is administered by a devoted group of volunteers including the Riptide Steering Committee, coaches, team managers and parents – all contributing a huge amount of time and dedication to support the program.
Training for the Riptide teams runs for 10 months from September – June with regular league play concluding in February and play-downs starting in March. The winner of the play-downs earns the right to represent Vancouver Island in both the Coastal A Cup (May 6 & 7, Aldergrove, BC) and the Provincial A Cup (July 6 & 7, Surrey, BC) Tournaments.
This incredible accomplishment is due to the countless hours and commitment put in by the technical staff, team officials and parent volunteers BUT most of all the players, who continually show – rain or shine…or snow – their immense passion for this amazing game of soccer.
