VIPL Riptide fees – What they provide

The Riptide is a not-for-profit program organized and operated by the Upper Island Soccer Association, and supported by a Steering Committee and Member Clubs (CRYSA, CVUSC, PHYSA and PRYSA ). The Riptide provides a positive character-building sporting experience through a high caliber soccer program. As a member of the Riptide program you are supported directly by dedicated volunteers and professional staff. Registration with your home club and the Riptide offers access to play in the VIPL at the second highest caliber in the BC Soccer League Play Pathway

  • $25 Hardship fund

  • $55 Riptide initiatives

Hardship Fund ,

This fund assists families in need with registration fees and on occasion helps players attend tournaments or Provincial Championships. Most Hardship funds are used annually; any money left over is moved to next year’s general revenue. The fund is evaluated annually to ensure priorities are met and the amounts collected are appropriate.

Coaches Kit and Equipment,

Coaches are outfitted with team clothing when they first start, then only as needed. The remainder of this fund goes into equipment.

UISA Administration Fee

The UISA staff perform over 800 hours per year directly for VIPL and Riptide. They undertake many tasks on behalf of the program which include; scheduling, coordination of league & cup play, communications, all financial functions, Gala & Academy planning and support, meeting minutes, and tryout registration. The UISA staff track hours worked on the two UISA VIPL franchises. This is evaluated annually to ensure appropriate & sufficient funding.

Team Funds

Teams receive $25 per player to use toward team events, travel, and tournament registration. Teams may also apply for a tournament fee from member clubs. In addition, any sponsorship funds solicited by the teams go directly to the team; Riptide or UISA do not receive any of these funds.

Gala

The ticket cost of the Gala for players is included in their VIPL Fees

Riptide Initiatives

This cost goes towards maintaining the standards of our technical team and supporting other Riptide initiatives such as Bursaries, guest speakers, and match analysis.

Technical Director Fund

From this fund, Riptide contracts a Technical Director on a yearly basis. The TD is responsible for implementing and executing weekly development and training sessions through league & cup play and Academy; player education series; match analysis; monthly training in Powell River; overseeing trials and evaluations; conducting Coaches and Team Manager meetings and communication; analysis and advocating for players with Universities and BCSPL. In addition, corporate sponsorship supplements the Technical Director fund and provides technical training staff and equipment for the program.

Academy

The Spring Academy is non-game based and devoted to developing technical ability and the application in small-sided play within a less competitive environment. We believe this environment is critical to the overall development of high performance players as it allows them to develop the more creative side of the game. It also enables players to hone the key technical components of the game to a degree not possible during the months of game-focused play.

Conclusion

Riptide is supported by many volunteers and a small number of professional staff. All are dedicated to improving and growing the Riptide. All funds collected go towards supporting the players, coaches, technical staff and steering committee to meet our goal of providing a positive character-building sporting experience through a high caliber soccer program.

Three Marine Harvest Riptide teams have clinched first place in their respective league play: U18 boys, U18 girls and U16 girls. There are also a couple of teams with 1-2 games remaining in league play that also have their eyes set on ending league play at the top of the table: U15 girls and U14 boys. In fact the U15 girls have a home and home series against Victoria North to determine who finishes at the top of the table. Importantly all VIPL teams will qualify for the post-season following league play.

The VIPL post-season commences the weekend of February 24-25 for teams playing in the quarter finals. Most of the Riptide Teams will likely advance directly to the semi-finals the weekend of March 3-4 due to the number of teams in each division and/or where the team finished in the standings.

The goal of our program is to see all teams compete for the opportunity to advance beyond the post-season and earn the right to participate in the A-Cup Provincials in July 2018. Last year, we had eight teams in the finals on the last day of post-season and were lucky enough to have three teams qualify for the provincials. The key to our success is working all season long towards having each of our teams peak at the right time for the play-offs. It has been an absolute pleasure to observe each of our teams in these final stages of league play and see them peaking at the exact time we have been working toward the past 6 ½ months. Win, lose or draw we are very proud of our program, our players, the coaches, staff and managers. In fact, we observe growth in many ways each time we see our teams train and play. It is a rare and unique pleasure to be able to watch so many young athletes pushing themselves on and off the field. To improve themselves at the game of soccer, academically and also to be positive community members.

We are very proud of the commitment of all players with the Riptide Program and consider the league play and post-season a valuable way to monitor the players development. We are also very proud of the efforts of our graduating class and players looking into a post-secondary education and planning to pursue soccer once they graduate from the Riptide:

– Maddy Harris (2002) and Ally Carpendale (2001) recently visited UNBC for a campus tour and trained with the team
– Shohei Iwamoto (2000) and Jared Perras (2000) are training with the UVIC Vikes this month
– Tony Powsey (2000) has been training with VIU Women’s Team
– Olivia Sellentin (2000) has been out to visit Dalhousie and St. Francis Xavier Universities
– Kaleigh Harris (2000) has been to visit Dalhousie and Lethbridge Universities
– Jaylon Grenier (2000) has been out to visit Queen’s University and McMaster University
– Chirs Fisher (2001) has been approached by the University of Guelph
– Cullen Bullhozer (2000) will be attending the TRU Open Camp
– Cameron Kearns (2000) and Emma Skalik have been approached by the University of Lethbridge
– The U18 Riptide Girls team will be playing exhibition games against Peninsula College (Port Angeles), VIU and UIVC in the coming weeks.

We are now in the midst of planning our spring academy, which includes all current U14-U16 boys and girls teams and will also be open to non-Riptide players born 2007-2002. The spring academy runs from April 10 to June 14 and includes two training sessions weekly plus a game day on the weekend. There are special events including 7-aside tournaments with teams from across Vancouver Island, as well as the opportunity to attend a Whitecaps game. The Riptide Technical Team Coaches Ken Garraway, Stephen Hall, Ash Mohtadi and Shel Brodsgaard with all be the lead coaches in the academy. There will also be a specialized trainer for the goalkeepers and a host of mentor coaches from within the Riptide Program to train with, educate and motivate the younger participants. Each spring we come together for a 10-week block of training, games, fun, relationship building and community building. There is an Academy information meeting planned for March 5th, 2018 with the time and location to be determined. Online program registration is now open at:

We are pleased to welcome Erin McNulty and Stuart Neely on Saturday, October 14th, 2017 who will be presenting to the Riptide Players and Parents on the Scholarship Planning Process.

Erin is a former Canadian Women’s National Team Player who grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and earned her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree on Full Scholarships while attending US Universities. She has also played professional soccer in Canada and in Europe.

Stuart Neely has coached in youth world cup qualifying events as well as many international tours while working the Canada Soccer Association (CSA). During that time, he also served as a coach educator at all levels of instruction from child to senior (A License). In recent years while working with Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC of the MLS, he spent a great amount of time developing youth footballers and programs to suit their needs. Coaching within the MLS, USL, PDL, CIS and overseas structures, he has learned a great deal and is excited to share his ideas and vision on the game from a coaching education perspective. Stuart holds a Masters in Physical Education, Bachelors in Adult Education as well as being a Level 5 Chartered Professional Coach

We are pleased to welcome both Erin and Stuart to lend their expertise in the area to help families and athletes learn more about the process. The event details will be confirmed in the weeks ahead, however, we can expect a 6:30 pm start at a venue to be determined. The Marine Harvest Riptide are seeking the services of an individual to coordinate the weekly video taping of games. The chosen person will need to be available on Saturdays & Sundays between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm. Traditionally, we have the potential for two home games to be played each day on the weekend at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm in either Campbell River or the Comox Valley. Our goal is to have the games taped and recorded through the use of our Hi-Pod and Video Camera. All we ask is that the chosen individual be prepared to transfer the hi-pod to and from the venue (with a vehicle provided), set-up the Hi-Pod, tape the game and upload the video files to the Riptide Pointstreak Account (which then allows the coaches to download and view the recorded game). This is a paid position and requires a driver’s license. If you are interested please complete the following list of questions.

We are hosting an information meeting for all players born 1997-2001 males who are interested in playing for the Riptide next fall.

1. We are currently exploring the idea of adding a U21 Team to compete in the VISL U21 Division in the fall. The team would be a combination of players from the North Island ages 1997-1999 with the opportunity to include younger players in the 2000 age group.

2. We are going to be running the U17-U18 Riptide Program for the 2000-2001 born players in the VIPL as well but we need to consider the following: the Canadian Soccer Association has just announced there will be National Championships at the U15 and U17 age groups, which means that if your team wins provincials at U17 you are then selected to attend the National Championships. Therefore, we will also be required to consider his opportunity and determine if

A. We have enough players and interest to run a U17 team in the VIPL for next fall (2001 born players only).

B. We do not have enough interest or players and will run a U17-U18 team in the VIPL for next fall (2001 and 2000 born players).

The questionnaire is for players inside and outside of the Riptide who might have interest in any of these programs. The information meeting will be used to assess the level of interest in the programs listed above and determine our next course of action pertaining to trials. The meeting will take place at the CVUSC Clubhouse on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm and we ask that all interested parties complete this form prior.
